A. Explanation. As outlined in Lesson 1: Course Information assessment and grading is based on the following protocol:

1. 40% 'Understandings' blog posts. Entries to your e-portfolio in response to the Social Computing Key Questions. Grading of blog posts is based critical thinking, clarity, and sufficient quantity.

Please select your four (4) best pieces of work (4 out of 8 posts) & then complete the table below.

2. 20% Readings blog posts. Your answers to questions on readings posted to your e-portfolio. Grading of answers is based on accuracy, clarity, and sufficient quantity.

Please select your two (2) best pieces of work (2 out of 4 readings) & then complete the table below.

3. 15% Skills. Completion of technology work for each lesson.

I will check your Record of Work again, and select, say, any for pieces of work. Then I will go to your e-Portfolio and check there that the task is complete.

4. 20% Social Software Session (S3). You will select a Web 2.0 tool from the S3 Toolbox and teach the class (or a small group) how to use it. You will use digital tools to present a summary of the main features of the tool, then you will teach others how others to use the tool, especially integration strategies with other applications, and finally, you will lead a group discussion which addresses the Social Computing Key Questions.

The evaluation of your session was based on the satisfactory/unsatisfactory protocol included in the S3 Instructions for Students. To receive the full 20% you must have completed each task satisfactorily. The most problematic was the 'Teach the Tool' task that required each presenter to teach some of the main features, in other words you needed an activity of some kind for your 'students' to do. In the sessions that received 'Not Satisfactory,' this was kind of open 'play' time that did not involve the presenter actually teaching the tool.

5% Research Collection. You will post a minimum 20 resources to our shared, class research collection maintained at deli.cio.us. As you surf the web in search of information about social computing, you will bookmark items using the tag scicu. You are also encouraged to bookmark resources that you think classmates may be interested in. You will refer to and link to items from this collection in your 'Understandings' blog posts, posts on Course Readings, and posts on your S3. You will be alerted to new items in the Collection in your RSS aggregator (Bloglines, Sage), or alternatively on the SC homepage, click Class Web Box.

I can access your Delicious account via your username and check the number of relevant items you have posted to the Research Collection.

What is an unworkshop?
Unworkshops are very informal. They can be offered on the assumption that learners learn more, more effectively when they learn in contexts that mirror how they learn in daily life. Much of what of what we need to know is learned on the job, on the spot, at point of need. While unevents are still relatively new, unconferences, unworkshops, unmeetings, and unsalons are now conducted all over the world. It is understandable that an unworkshop will not suit everyone, so I will pause here if you think this is opportunity is not really 'you.'

Still with me? OK then, here are our unworkshop details:

1. Informal learning
If you would like to know more, please watch this video from Jay Cross, an active proponent of informal learning.

2. Rationale
Technology (especially social software) and the in-built capacities of networks are causing overwhelming changes in all aspects of society, which means that new skills, understandings, and attitudes are needed for our success in work and study, and in our social lives.

3. Aims

Learn how to use social software using social software
Acquire proficiency in the use of a wiki, Google Docs & Spreadsheets, blogs, and discussion forums
Develop an understanding of what is 'social' about social software
Develop an understanding of the affordances of social software for teaching, as well as for your personal, professional development (teacher as learner)
Discover whether you want to use Google Docs & Spreasheets as your new home base to create, share, publish (documents, spreadsheets, & presentations), collaborate, and access your work anywhere
Discover whether you want to further develop your own e-portfolio

4. Objectives
Over the next nine (10) days (Sat 11/25 - Mon 12/3) you will complete a task that is likely to take you 3~5 hours. You are encouraged to participate in ongoing, online discussions. You will work in a distributed, virtual network to undertake a collaborative exploration of some key social learning technologies by individually completing a shared, common task.

5. Online learnscape
This unworkshop is wholly online. These are the individual pieces which you and I will use to link to each other and to the materials. After you have created your individual pieces, I will then connect everyone together to create the virtual, distributed network that will serve our needs during the course of the unworkshop.

*Homepage. The main learning space for this unworkshop is a collaborative wiki. A wiki is web site that anyone can write & edit. Our homepage also has a very simple discussion board that will be handy to let everyone share ideas, ask questions, or get help. Let's see how we can make it work to support our own learning and other participants' learning. Anyone can start a discussion, just click this button at the bottom of this page: Start a New Thread

**Individual blogs. Each of you will set up your own blog to use as an e-portfolio. You will link individual blogs to this homepage. I will also set the homepage to
automatically recieve updates from each blog. If you already have your own blog, you may of course use that, otherwise I recommend setting up your e-portfolio at Blogger, which is a free Google service.

***Google Docs & Spreadsheets (GDS). You will each create a GDS account, which will give you a free web-based word processor and spreadsheet that will enable you to share and collaborate online.

6. What to do
This is the schedule that I propose, which may be altered over time to accommodate individual needs and the needs of the group as they emerge. Please try to complete these tasks by the following dates:

A Framework for Developing your Issue Entrepreneurship

This five-step process is based on Agre's ideas for participatory democratic citizenship (in Feenberg & Barney 211):

1. Identify issues - Do a self analysis by examining who you are and what issues are important to you

2. Research and analysis - Establish your credibility by providing others with evidence that you know your issue

3. Stake out a public position on your issue - 1) Research your target group (those people whose opinions/actions you want to change). What characteristics does this group have? 2) Define clearly the idea you wish to promote. A message that is "sticky" (Barbasi 3) will capture peoples' interest, encourage them to adopt it, and help you spread it further and further.

4. Build a social network - Develop an organisational base of citizens who support your "sticky message", especially existing organisations whose position is ideologically compatible with yours.

5. Design an IE homepage - Stake out a personal, public presence on your issue. Your homepage will connect a) You to everyone else in your network b) Everyone else to everyone else in your network, and c) Everyone to your "sticky message".

Issue Entrepreneurship (IE) Guide Questions

To assist you understand, design, and implement your plan for social change on an issue you feel passionate about, address these questions in your blog. As your understanding develops and your ideas change you will address these questions again, but for now, your early ideas are all that is required.

Your message
1. What is your "sticky message" (Barabasi 3)? What is the idea/issue you wish to promote? You may choose to focus on a personal, social, or global issue but it must be something that is important to you since you will be developing your IE throughout the semester.

Knowledge of main strategic groups
2. Who is your target group (those whose ideas you want to change)?
3. Who makes up the organisational base (supporters) you will need to nurture and grow? (Include existing groups with compatible interests too)

Strategy for network building
4. How could you develop your organisational base? What strategies could you use to spread and encourage uptake of your sticky message?

Towards design
5. Map your IE network. Show nodes including your "sticky message", agent (you, others?), main strategic groups, and the links between these nodes. Use social drawing software to create your IE network map e.g. Gliffy, or your own choice of service that also supports web sharing and collaboration. Your will continue to develop your IE network map over the semester, so this is just your early ideas of the structure and topography of your IE network.
